About us

Youth Choral Societies of Catalonia is the federation which brings together the youth choral societies of Catalonia. Its aims are to promote and co-ordinate choral singing among young people; to facilitate their gradual integration into adult choral societies; and to expand their knowledge and their musical, social and human potential.

The choral societies which belong to the Youth Choral Societies of Catalonia are made up of young men and women aged 16 to 35 who want to improve their musical knowledge and to get to know each other through choral singing.

Who can be a member of the YCSC?

  • As a choral society, any group of young people (aged between 16 and 35) who want to sing:
    • Choral societies, chamber choirs and vocal groups
    • Women's choirs
    • Older children's choral societies
    • High school choral societies
    • Music School and Conservatory choral societies
    • University choral societies
    • Gospel choirs
    • Theatre music groups,
    • and others
  • And, as a partner member, any other person of any age who is a friend of young people who sing and wants to benefit from the advantages which the YCSC can offer.

Youth Choral Societies of Catalonia is part of the Catalan Choral Societies Movement (CCSM) together with the other Catalan federations.

Youth Choral Societies of Catalonia is a member of the International Choral Music Federation (ICMF) and a member of the Catalan Music Council (CMC).

History

Youth Choral Societies of Catalonia started out in the academic year 1969-70 under the name Intermediate Groups of Catalonia (IGC). It was made up of young people who had been in children's choral societies.

We celebrated our Xth anniversary in 1979 in Manresa with a concert in which all the groups took part together with the Barcelona CSMM Chamber Orchestra.

In 1984 we premiered J. Domingo Mombiela's suite for choir and orchestra La Primavera at the Palau de la Música Catalana to mark the XVth IGC Meeting.

On our XXth Anniversary in May 1989, under a new name of Young People's Choral Societies of Catalonia we performed Schubert's Mass in Sol M with the help of the Youth Orchestra of Young Musicians, conducted by Francesc Llongueras.

In 1994, to celebrate our 25th anniversary we commissioned the pianist and composer Albert Guinovart and the poet Miquel Desclot to compose the pacifist cantata Fills del Segle. This work was performed with the Barcelona and Catalan National Symphony Orchestra (BCSO), conducted by Salvador Brotons.

Also in 1994, Young People's Choral Societies of Catalonia was awarded the National Popular Culture Prize for the best Cultural Promotion Activity given by the Generalitat of Catalonia's Department of Culture.

Young People's Choral Societies of Catalonia took an active role in the I Music in Catalonia Congress (1994), in the Catalan Popular and Traditional Culture Congress (1995) and in the I Choral Singing in Catalonia Congress (1999).

In November 1995 it was a founding federation of the Catalan Choral Society Movement (CCSM).

In 2000, on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of our foundation we performed Carl Orff's Carmina Burana, conducted by Pierre Cao and once again with the Barcelona and Catalan National Symphony Orchestra (BCSO). In addition, with the opening of our new head office we changed our name to Youth Choral Societies of Catalonia .
